Link Light Rail’s First Year
July 21, 2010
It’s been a year since Sound Transit opened the Central Link light rail connecting downtown Seattle with Tukwila, then extending to Sea-Tac airport in December 2009. The second leg is currently under construction and will open in 2016 to connect the system with the University of Washington. Sound Transit officials estimated ridership for the first year was 6 million. Light rail carries approximately 23,400 riders each weekday.
I ride the light rail to work a few days a week myself – sometimes leaving the car at home for a week or two. It can be a challenge though when driving is faster and cheaper with ample free parking and a quick drive to SODO. I try to do my part as an avid Seattleite to support the system and reduce my footprint on the world. And I do enjoy my morning walk though Seattle’s livelier neighborhoods to Westlake Center – then it’s just a quick 10 minute ride to the old grind. Here are a few shots from the last year.
